queries:using and extending broadleaf features

hi ...
i could set up broadleaf .i mean the demosite.its up and running.
i have the following queries
1. i want to change look and feel.
2. if i'm not switching database , can i perform database operations. and i want detailed instructions of the default one the broadleafuses.
3. Which are the things i can extend .
its like abstract for me!!! pls help me in coming out of that abstract view.
