Support for UOM (Unit of Measure)

Support for UOM (Unit of Measure) would be a valuable feature. For example, we have a bottle we sell on our site that we sell individually (1), in a pack (12) and a case (24). Selecting a different UOM (item, pack, or case) wouldn't change the SKU of the item added to the cart, but obviously would change the price. In some cases that price is a simple multiplication of the item price (a pack would be = item price*12), or UOM may have a bulk discount price.

It sounds like you could get the feature that you want via our concept of product options. For a particular product option, you can have price modifiers. The example that we use in our demo site is buying an XL t-shirt adds a few dollars to the price.

Although for your problem it seems like you are just selecting quantity, right? It seems like you are just allowing the user to quickly select the number of bottles that they want to purchase.

By the way, we do have a concept of weight unit of measure. A Sku has a Weight, which has 2 fields: amount and unit of measure. Our 'WeightUnitOfMeasureType' currently only has POUNDS and KILOGRAMS but you might want to add one for 'LITER'.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your reply. The product option doesn't help so much as it will drive me to a new SKU. I am trying to implement pricing where some skus can be purchased individually, by the pack, or by the case. The pack and the case may have some kind of discount pricing. The SKU is the same whether purchased individually, by the pack or by the case.

With product options, you are not required to have them drive to a new sku. If the default sku is sellable, then you can simply add options to the default sku and then use the price modifiers on the product option values.

Have you seen product bundles? With bundles you can assign Skus and then do an 'item sum' pricing model (which means that the price of the bundle will be the summation of all of the individual Sku prices) or 'bundle' which means that you can explicitly set the price of the bundle as a whole.

Does your recommendation to use product options work only for default SKU's or would it work for non-default SKU's as well?

(Your diligence in responding to these queries is outstanding. Thank you!)

I feel like I'm mixing around terms, let me back up a bit.

Product Option
- Analagous to things like 'Size' or 'Color' or 'Weight'
- Has a list of Product Option Values, which are things like 'Large', 'Blue' or '5lbs'

Product Option Value
- Things like 'Large', 'Blue' or '5lbs'
- Usually a set of these within different product options form an 'additionalSku'
- Each value can have a price modifier. For instance, an 'XL' t-shirt could cost $1 more

Product
- Has a required OneToOne Sku relationship (called the defaultSku)
- Has a non-required list of Product Options (analagous to something like 'Size' or 'Color' or 'Weight')
- Has a non-required list of Skus (which we call additionalSkus), usually related by product option values.

The idea behind the additionalSkus list is to support when you want to sell different permutations of Skus according to product option values that the user might select. For instance, this would be appropriate if you wanted to track inventory for all of the 'Blue' 'Medium' tshirts, where 'Blue' and 'Medium' are both Product Option Values from the 'Color' and 'Size' product options related to the original product.

So I guess my question is: If every product has one default sku which is sellable, can I simply create a product options "Case (24)" and "Pack (12)" that modify the price for that default SKU?
