I've been looking for the way to upload product images, but it only allows to specify media item's metadata. I don't see how we can upload the actual image. Please advise if this is supported or not.

You should be able to upload an image asset in the asset screen of the content management section of the admin. Then, you should be able to go to the product screen and either edit a media item (double click the existing row in the list grid for media), or add a new media item. There is a text box to be able to enter the url for the media, but there is also a button next to this text field that will bring up an asset browser. You can use this to select a media item you've uploaded before and use it for your product image.

Is there a plan to make this better? It is completely unintuitive, and even if you know how to do it, it's a hassle to do this for every image of every product.

Yes, we have an open ticket to allow the upload from the media selection dialogue which will improve usability.
