Curious: Why not use Spring Web Flow?

I'm new to broadleaf, after skimming the doc I found that broadleaf is using a self defined flow/activity pattern, so I wonder why broadleaf has chosen not to used the standard Spring Web Flow extension? Additional feature needed?
